The History of ISO 14001
Environmental management systems are relatively modern developments, and have only come about with the increased global concern for the state of the earth that has emerged in the last few decades. The ISO 14001 standard has its roots in these early developments. Environmental issues first became a mainstream popular and political concern in the 1960s, and the first global United Nations conference on the Human environment took place in 1972.
1973
Core Principles Established
The core principles that would eventually influence the ISO 14000 framework were created and an action plan drafted.
1992
Consolidation of the BS7750 Standard
In March 1992 The British Standards Institution Group published the world’s first environmental management systems standard, BS 7750, as part of a response to growing concerns about protecting the environment..
1996
ISO 14001 is Created
BS 7750 supplied the template for the development of the ISO 14000 series in 1996, which representation from ISO committees all over the world.
2004
Second Edition
In order to keep up with the ever changing world and environmental discoveries, ISO 14001 was revised and updated with a second addition to ensure that the companies who implemented it were having a genuine, beneficial impact on the environment
2015
Current Edition
The third update for ISO 14001 was published in 2015 and focuses on the improvement of environmental performance rather than the improvement of the management system itself. Companies are asked to consider their impact on the environment throughout the entire life cycle of production.
